Why would I need gallbladder surgery?
Gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) is indicated when gallstones or biliary sludge cause undesirable symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Gallbladder surgery may also be necessary due to a disorder of movement of the gallbladder known as biliary dyskinesia.
Do I need my gallbladder?
The gallbladder is not necessary for normal gastrointestinal function, and patients experience little to no adverse effects after it is removed.
Is gallbladder surgery safe?
Gallbladder surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that is typically performed laparoscopically with very low risk for complications.
How long will I be in the hospital?
Most patients can go home from the hospital the same day as their gallbladder surgery.
Will I gain weight after my gallbladder is removed?
Patients do not typically experience any significant changes in weight after gallbladder removal.
Will I have any gastrointestinal issues after surgery?
Some patients experience mild diarrhea and urgency of stools that usually resolves a few weeks to months after gallbladder surgery.
